Sunlight streamed through the window beside the bed, warming her, enclosing her in a mellow haze. She lay there for a while, soaking up the sunshine, relaxing into the comfort of plush bed cushions and luxurious covers that pampered her skin. This should have been a peaceful moment, a fulfilling moment in which to replenish the energy she’d lost. It was not to be so. Confusion clouded her thoughts. Something seemed wrong, but in her half-awake state, it wouldn’t become clear.

Abruptly she jerked up in bed. It took only seconds for her to realize where she was and to remember what had transpired last night. The clock on the night stand read 8:12 a.m. A hand-written note was leaning neatly against the wrought-iron base of the lamp.

Smiling, she fluffed up her pillow and propped herself up against the headboard. But then, breaking her reverie, an alarm sounded in her head. She wiped the grin from her face. Stop mooning. You’re not a school girl, she chided herself.

What had she done? She’d used Henry—the one man who loved her completely. Used him to fulfill her physical needs. And now he probably thought she would marry him. She rubbed her forehead, then her fingers dropped to cover her lips. This won’t do, she thought. Okay, she’d been weak. No excuses. No blaming it on the awful circumstances she found herself in. Life was hard, serious. A person had to be able to stand alone to survive. She had always refused to let another person complete her, although that was exactly what she’d been doing lately.

She pressed her lips together. “No more leaning on Stewart either. Her nephew was an awesome young man, but he was not her keeper. Last night she’d had as much gumption as molasses. Her actions had led both Stewart and Henry to believe she had no backbone, no strength. What kind of a person have I become? she wondered. I’ve been thoughtless, selfish. But no more. I will make it right.
